According to a recent study, people who live in lowlands have a much greater risk to get lung cancer in comparison to people who live in the mountains. In fact, it is very important on which altitude above sea level you live in.

Besides smoking, smog, genetics or the working life spent in a mine, one of the reasons why people in certain areas more common acquire lung cancer is believe it or not – the air that they breathe!

This is so because the air in the lowlands is thicker and richer in oxygen which, beside the benefits, is dangerous to our health.  Our body uses oxygen in the process of digestion or, more precisely, in the transformation of food into energy. 

This metabolic process is called oxidation. During the process of oxidation free radicals, extremely carcinogenic metabolic products, are released. Moreover, free radicals have many negative effects on our body, including damage on DNA and mutation of cells, which eventually leads to cancer. Our lungs, being the first organs affected by oxygen, are most likely to develop cancer.

Therefore, if you want to reduce the risk of developing lung cancer, you should move to a higher altitude above sea, where the air is thinner and is not polluted. It is commonly known that our lungs spread and work much better on fresh air.
